Today is the day you step through the gates of the Everest region — both literally (Sagarmatha National Park checkpoint, permit inspection required) and spiritually. The trail climbs steadily, crossing multiple suspension bridges including the iconic Hillary Suspension Bridge, which sways 180 meters above the thundering Dudh Koshi gorge, adorned with thousands of colorful prayer flags.

The trail contours along the high ridge above the Dudh Koshi Valley, offering relentless panoramic views of Everest (8,848m), Lhotse (8,516m), Nuptse (7,861m), Ama Dablam (6,812m), and dozens of lesser but equally dramatic Himalayan peaks.

Pass the Sherpa villages of Khumjung and Khunde — home to the famous Hillary School, built in 1961 by Sir Edmund Hillary himself. Then descend to the Dudh Koshi River crossing and climb back up through ancient rhododendron and silver fir forest to Tengboche.

At Tengboche, the Tengboche Monastery commands everything. The day you came for. Wake before dawn. Breakfast in the dark. Step outside into thin, cold mountain air and begin the most significant walk of your life. The trail crosses the Khumbu Glacier's vast, chaotic moraine — a surreal landscape of boulders, ice, and silence — for 3–4 hours before reaching the last tea houses on Earth at Gorak Shep (5,164m). Drop your pack. Your guide leads you forward across the glacier itself — a 2-hour approach through towering seracs and glacial debris — to Everest Base Camp at 5,364m. During spring climbing season (April–May), the camp is alive with yellow and orange expedition tents, rope teams, and the constant roar of the Khumbu Icefall. Then the summit of the world ignites — a blazing triangle of snow and rock illuminated by the first light in all of Asia. Below and around you, in every direction: Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori, Cho Oyu, Ama Dablam, Makalu. The entire Himalayan massif, laid out like a relief map. You cannot see Everest's summit from Base Camp (it is hidden by Nuptse's ridgeline) — but from Kala Patthar, the great summit stands completely exposed and overwhelming. Stay as long as you wish. What is Altitude Sickness (AMS)?

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) occurs when your body doesn't have enough time to adapt to reduced oxygen levels at altitude. Above 2,500m, the partial pressure of oxygen decreases significantly. Symptoms include: persistent headache, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, loss of appetite, and disturbed sleep.

Critical fact: Altitude sickness cannot be predicted. Olympic athletes get AMS. Sedentary people sometimes sail through. Physical fitness is NOT a protection against AMS.

What to Eat on the EBC Trek

Tea house food is an underrated pleasure of the EBC trek. The kitchen menus grow increasingly limited as you gain altitude, but the food is fresh, hot, and hearty. All your main meals are included in the package.

Breakfast options: Eggs (any style), porridge, Tibetan bread, toast, chapati, granola, muesli, pancakes. Tea or coffee always included.

Lunch & Dinner highlights:
